Top-Level Invitational Presented by COBRA PUMA Golf at Smuggler’s Glen Golf Course

The second of two high-level amateur golf tournamet's conducted by the team from Flagstick Golf Magazine (Flagstick.com) and played at the Smuggler’s Glen Golf Course in Lansdowne, Ontario returns for 2026.

The original iteration of the Flagstick.com Shootout tournament ran for almost a decade, beginning in 2009, and featured a field of 72 players in a 36-hole competition on the layout regarded as one of the best in Eastern Ontario.

2025 Recap

The 2025 edition of the Flagstick.com Shootout presented by COBRA PUMA at the Smugglers Glen Golf Course was played in steamy conditions on July 12/13. A wide range of players, from top junior, amateurs, and college players (plus club players) turned up from across Ontario and Quebec to take on the course for 36 holes of competition.

The tournament, also supported by Gananoque Chev, saw players competing across three divisions in the third edition of the tournament in its new era. The event was reborn in 2023 after originally running from 2009 – 2017.

Shane Stanley of Metcalfe, Ontario, now a student golfer at NCAA DII Wisconsin-Parkside, stretched his lead with an eagle on his opening hole on the last day and did not look back.

By the time he made the turn Stanley had opened up a nine-stroke lead (at -6 overall) over Jared Coyle and Hunter McGee. Play by the Carleton Golf & Yacht Club member was boosted by four birdies and an eagle for the nine holes against one bogey and a double bogey.

However, not all was smooth sailing for the leader. While he was not aware of the extent of his large lead, he admitted that knowing that he was ahead and wanting to win, the nerves started to affect him on the back nine. Fortunately he had given himself enough cushion that a four-over par back nine did not change the outcome.

Rounds of 69 and 73 were enough to finish at -2 overall and secure a six-shot victory over Hunter McGee.

"The nerves got to me a bit but I was able to hold my ground,” said the relieved champion as he hoisted the Flagstick.com Shootout winner’s trophy. “I thought my lead was four or five but I really didn’t check until the end,” he added.

Stanley, who has been a perennial contender in Flagstick Tournaments and finished 7th at the Shootout in 2024, was glad to come out on top. “It feels good after being in contention in the final round the last couple of years, especially this year in the (Flagstick) Open when I had a tough final round when I knew I could have won. It’s good to get the monkey off the back and hopefully go back-to-back next year.”

The 6600-yard golf course at Smugglers Glen was designed by Boyd Barr. The layout was the long-time vision of the Seal family who have owned and operated the Glen House Resort since 1962. It was nominated for the Best New Golf Course in Canada Award in 2006 by Golf Digest. Since then it has annually received recognition in the Flagstick Golf Magazine’s Reader’s Choice Awards and proved to be a worthy host for the PGA TOUR Canada in 2012 for the initial playing of The Great Waterway Classic.

It was and continues to be a hearty example of how golf fits well in the Canadian Shield. The land is marked by rolling topography providing a bevy of drops and rises, along with a natural accent of white pines, granite outcroppings and indigenous plant life.
